Park & Read Program
Back for a second summer, the DNRE and the Library of Michigan are again offering Park & Read at more than 400 libraries across Michigan. Park & Read allows library card-holders the ability to "check-out" a one-day pass into any Michigan state park or recreation area in lieu of the resident daily motor vehicle permit. This $6 savings also provides free access to the more than 500 events taking place in state parks throughout the summer. Passes are valid for seven days from check-out and can be used for one day at any one of Michigan's 98 state parks. Passes are valid for day-use only. Check here for a list of participating libraries. http://www.michigan.gov/documents/dnr/ParticipatingLibraries_280609_7.pdf www.michigan.gov/dnr/0,1607,7-153-10365_36576-215611--,00.html

Muskegon Civic Theatre Presents "Something's Afoot"
This murder mystery is a musical spoof of the whodunit genre, typified by Agatha Christie’s murder mysteries and the musical styles of the past. Ten people are stranded in an English country house, which is set on an island, during a raging thunderstorm. One by one they are picked off by fiendishly clever devices. While the bodies are piling up in the library, the surviving guests work frantically to uncover the identity and motivation of the cunning culprit. Performances are at the Beardsley Theater in the Frauenthal Center for Performing Arts, 425 W. Western Avenue in downtown Muskegon. Thursday, Friday and Saturday performances are at 7:30 p.m. Sunday Matinee is at 3:00 p.m. For tickets, StarTickets (800) 585-3737 or www.startickets.com or the Frauenthal Box Office (231) 727-8001. www.muskegoncivictheatre.org

Cinema Sunday: A Man Escaped
A Man Escaped (Un condamné à mort s’est échappé) Director: Robert Bresson, 1956 (99 mins.) French with English subtitles Free with Museum Membership or with Museum Admission. Bresson’s film tells the true story of Resistance leader Andre Devigny’s escape from a Nazi prison. Neither a nail biting, suspense thriller nor a flag-waving glorification of the Resistance, the film focuses exclusively on authentically documenting the construction of Devigny’s instruments of escape and the rigorousness of his meticulous planning. By equating the quiet dignity of Devigny’s devotion to freedom with an introspective prayer for holy absolution, Bresson’s understated style manages to charge the film with more soul stirring emotion than a thousand epics. MMA’s film club screens famous films of art cinema from all over the world, focusing on the key works of cinema’s major directors. Each screening is introduced by a short scholarly account the film’s cultural and historical importance and followed by an open discussion. The programmer and host: E.J. Hamacher. The movie is free with museum membership or with museum admission. The film begins at 2:00 p.m. at the Muskegon Museum of Art, 296 W. Webster Ave in Downtown Muskegon. Overbrook Theater: Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead
Before winning an Oscar as a writer of Shakespeare in Love, Tom Stoppard delivered another ingenious comic retelling involving the Bard of Stratford-upon-Avon. In 1967 he dove into the world's most famous play, Hamlet, and retold it from the point of view of two bumbling support players. The entire world is a stage, and Rosencrantz and Guildenstern play their part, finding themselves unwitting pawns in history's greatest tragedy. Performance times are 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday through Saturday and 3:00 p.m. on Sunday. The Overbrook Theater is located at Muskegon Community College, 221 S. Quarterline Road. Cinema Sunday: Before Tonight Is Over
Before Tonight Is Over (Kým sa skoncí táto noc) Director: Peter Solan, 1965 (86 mins.) Slovak with English subtitles. Free with Museum Membership or with Museum Admission. When they all cut loose there is no telling what might get exposed. MMA’s film club screens famous films of art cinema from all over the world, focusing on the key works of cinema’s major directors. Shout Freedom!
Photo League Selections from the Columbus Museum of Art Gritty, documentary images of urban life photographed by members of the New York Photo League, a group formed in 1938 whose membership was comprised of early pioneers in the documentary photography field. Novice and professional photographers alike used their camera lens to artistically capture a defining moment in our nation’s history as well as make statements on the social and economic climate of the era. The Photo League was one of the most influential photography movements of the 20th century but was surrounded in controversy and conjecture. It is also paradoxically one of the least known contributors in the history of photography. This exhibition will act as an educational piece for students and community members who are not familiar with its historical significance and the role it plays in contemporary documentary photography. The Muskegon Museum of Art is located at 296 W. Webster in Downtown Muskegon. For more information call 231-720-2570. www.muskegonartmuseum.org
