While the bodies are piling up in the library, the surviving guests work frantically to uncover the identity and motivation of the cunning culprit. West Michigan Symphony "The Romantic Road: A Passionate Journey"
It took Brahms more than 40 years before he dared to compose a symphony, and his final word on the subject is one of the greatest pieces of music ever written. It’s majestic, lyrical, deep, rousing and transporting. Steeped in the traditions of Bach and Beethoven, Brahms nevertheless created a completely novel style, full of passion and longing. Wagner’s Tannhäuser expresses the tension between pure spiritual love and carnal, erotic love, in an overture that is both lyrical (some would say catchy) and triumphant. The Bruch violin concerto is the essence of Romanticism, and a worthy complement to the other two pieces on the program. Virtuosic, expressive, and full of jaw-dropping pyrotechnics, it’s the perfect showcase for a young superstar-in-the-making. The concert is at 7:30 p.m. at the Frauenthal Center for the Performing Arts (corner of Third and Western in Downtown Muskegon). Tickets available at the www.westmichigansymphony.org, the Frauenthal Box Office Monday - Friday 11 a.m. - 6 p.m. and Startickets 800-585-3737. www.westmichigansymphony.org

Park & Read Program
Back for a second summer, the DNRE and the Library of Michigan are again offering Park & Read at more than 400 libraries across Michigan. Park & Read allows library card-holders the ability to "check-out" a one-day pass into any Michigan state park or recreation area in lieu of the resident daily motor vehicle permit. This $6 savings also provides free access to the more than 500 events taking place in state parks throughout the summer. Passes are valid for seven days from check-out and can be used for one day at any one of Michigan's 98 state parks. Passes are valid for day-use only. Check here for a list of participating libraries. http://www.michigan.gov/documents/dnr/ParticipatingLibraries_280609_7.pdf www.michigan.gov/dnr/0,1607,7-153-10365_36576-215611--,00.html

Muskegon Civic Theatre Presents "Something's Afoot"
This murder mystery is a musical spoof of the whodunit genre, typified by Agatha Christie’s murder mysteries and the musical styles of the past. Ten people are stranded in an English country house, which is set on an island, during a raging thunderstorm. One by one they are picked off by fiendishly clever devices. While the bodies are piling up in the library, the surviving guests work frantically to uncover the identity and motivation of the cunning culprit. Performances are at the Beardsley Theater in the Frauenthal Center for Performing Arts, 425 W. Western Avenue in downtown Muskegon. Thursday, Friday and Saturday performances are at 7:30 p.m. Sunday Matinee is at 3:00 p.m. For tickets, StarTickets (800) 585-3737 or www.startickets.com or the Frauenthal Box Office (231) 727-8001. www.muskegoncivictheatre.org

Shout Freedom!
Photo League Selections from the Columbus Museum of Art Gritty, documentary images of urban life photographed by members of the New York Photo League, a group formed in 1938 whose membership was comprised of early pioneers in the documentary photography field. Novice and professional photographers alike used their camera lens to artistically capture a defining moment in our nation’s history as well as make statements on the social and economic climate of the era. The Photo League was one of the most influential photography movements of the 20th century but was surrounded in controversy and conjecture. It is also paradoxically one of the least known contributors in the history of photography. This exhibition will act as an educational piece for students and community members who are not familiar with its historical significance and the role it plays in contemporary documentary photography. The Muskegon Museum of Art is located at 296 W. Webster in Downtown Muskegon. For more information call 231-720-2570. www.muskegonartmuseum.org
